Quilting Prep/Dropoff

  • How Should I Bring My Quilt In?

    • Your quilt should have all the seams pressed flat and be trimmed of all excess threads. Please DO NOT baste your quilt to the batting or backing (this includes safety pinning or spray basting). Keep your quilt top separate from the batting and backing since they'll be rolled separately onto the longarm.

  • How big does my backing fabric need to be?

    • Your backing should be 8 inches longer on the length and 8 inches wider on the width. So if your quilt top measures 50''x50'', your quilt back should measure 58''x58''. If you have a seam on your backing, it's preferable to have the seam going horizontal because it will lay better on the longarm. If you're not sure, I can always piece your backing for you as well.

  • Do I need to bring batting or do you have batting in the studio?

    • You can always bring your own batting, if you'd like. I'm happy to use batting provided by customers. If you don't have any on hand, I also carry batting in the studio. Typically, I carry 80/20 and 100% cotton, but I can also special order batting if you have something specific in mind for your quilt.

  • My edges are fraying. Can I still bring my quilt in?

    • Yes! I do prefer that you trim away as many threads and fibers as you can. But I understand that some fabrics fray more than others and trying to trim them all away is pretty tough. I ask that you keep in mind that if you have a mix of light fabrics next to darker ones, darker threads might shadow through to the front of the quilt if they get caught under a lighter fabric and I can't always prevent that from happening.

  • Do I need to mark the top left corner of my quilt top?

    • Please do! This makes the loading process much easier and takes some of the guess work out of quilt prep ahead of time.
